President's Ramble

Our NZ Junior Squash Reps
In recent years we’ve celebrated the stunning achievements of two of our junior boys squash players – Matthew Lucente and Gabe Yam.

This week they both headed off to Chennai, India to represent NZ at the world junior individual champs, followed by the biennial men’s world junior team championships. Accompanying them will be our very own squash coach, Manu Yam, who is part of the NZ boys coaching team.

To cap off a great year, Matthew has also been selected to represent NZ at the world youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 6-18 October 2018.

On behalf of the club, we wish Matthew, Gabe, Manu and the NZ boys and girls teams all the very best!

Club Survey
The Committee is keen to find out your thoughts about the club to help with our strategic planning. In the next few days a short survey will be sent to all senior members and older junior members to complete. Please spare 5 minutes to complete the survey – it will be your chance to give us important feedback that will help shape the future development of our great club.

The driveway
And finally – good news regarding the driveway and car park. Not only has the contract been awarded, the Council is also going to fix our drainage around Ray’s Wall by installing a cesspit. This is why the small shed adjacent to this area disappeared so quickly last month! We will keep everyone informed of dates for work as soon as they are known.

Tennis News

The summer tennis season ended in mid-May with the finals of our senior club champs. Congratulations to everyone who entered and made this year’s event one of the best – and of course congratulations to the winners, who were celebrated at the end-of-season prizegiving in early June. With our very own ‘Flight of the Wrong Chords’ in full swing, a great night was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Rex Grey and his team of helpers for putting on such a great night, and to the boys in the band who put in a lot of hours of practice.

Already we are starting to think about tennis interclub for 2018-19 – teams will have to be registered by 31 August so that draws can be released in early September. If you’re interested in playing senior tennis interclub this summer, contact Rex on

Saturday 16th June saw a ladies Bubbles n Bash afternoon take place. There was a fantastic turnout with 35 ladies enjoying the two games (tennis and squash) the club offers. It was great to see the skills of both the regular tennis and squash ladies adapting to being on the other court. A fun, relaxed afternoon enjoyed by all finished with a few glasses of bubbles. Thanks to all that attended to make it such a successful event.

The event was so successful that we are looking to hold another one in the next couple of months.

Squash News

Over Queen’s Birthday weekend, our Cousins Shield and Mitchell Cup teams, generously sponsored by Kingdom Decorators, competed in Hamilton against the best from around the country. Our womens team finished 7th, a great effort considering their youth, while the mens team lost in a close semi-final to Herne Bay, to finish 4th overall.

On the local scene, Hayden Adams led his M03 team to the club’s only senior winter pennant for 2018 – congrats to Hayden and the team of Ethan Karels, Chris Alvey, Michael Laws, Harvey Malva and Natalie Sayes.

The NI Junior Squash champs were held at the start of the July school holidays and the club has achieved some amazing results across the age groups:

Grace Spencer – U11 Champion
Justine Pausch – U11 4th
Ella Lash – U13 Champion
Ashlee Pepper – U15 5th special plate winner
Natalie Sayes – U17 3rd
Matthew Lucente – U19 Champion
Gabe Yam – U19 Runner up
