President's Ramble

In the next few weeks our junior and senior tennis club champs will be held. In recent years, entry numbers have been fantastic for both and we hope to see the same again this year. Equally important at events like this is the support from parents. So take the chance to leave work a little early and come and support your children when competition starts Monday 26 March. The bar will be open to ensure everyone can fight off dehydration!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we have been assured by Auckland Council that the carpark/driveway upgrade is still planned to go ahead sometime in the second half of the year. The project will go to tender in May. We will keep the pressure on….

Tennis News

Ray and Jacqui  Ray and Jacqui

On Sunday 25 February the annual Ray and Aly Adams Spring MXD tournament was played. On a beautifully sunny and warm afternoon, 15 pairs battled it out for the honour of winning the trophy. A lot of fun was had by all. In the final, Jacqui and Ray Adams held off Toni McKenty and Clive Melling to win their own trophy – for the first time. An amazing effort and fantastic to see considering the challenges Ray has had to face recently with various health issues.

David Blake, a club member and tennis fanatic, has often been seen on court 3 or court 7 with his ball machine. David is now offering fellow members the chance to hire the machine for an hour’s use each time. Go to his website for more details and information on how to book your hire.

With summer interclub into the final rounds, good luck to those teams who are close to winning their competitions. Remember, rained out matches must be played, so if managers/captains are having trouble getting opponents to agree to a date, let Louise or Rex know asap so that we can contact Tennis Northern and secure points.

From Tuesday 6th March for the next 5 weeks, we will have a number of parents enjoying the chance to learn tennis with our senior coaches. A number of parents have registered and turned up for the first night, which is fantastic news. Good luck everyone!

Lastly, don’t forget junior tennis club champs start Monday 26 March. Entry sheets will be up in the clubhouse this week. Senior tennis club champs entry sheets are already up, so get your entries in. There are plenty of divisions to enter, so don’t be afraid to give it a try!

Squash News

With the 2018 interclub season about to resume, there has been a lot of activity on the squash courts with training and practice matches. Manu has been extremely busy attracting new junior members to his programmes, so there are several new faces at the club.

On Sunday 25 February Squash Auckland held a training camp for juniors hoping to be selected for the Auckland Junior Quadrangular Team. Many congrats to the following members on their selection:

  • U11: Justine Pausch, Max Bailey, Karl Letica
  • U15: Ella Lash, Dileesia Henare
  • U17: Natalie Sayes
  • U19: Matthew Lucente and Gabe Yam

Also on 25 February, Sam Sayes won the Panmure A2 fundraiser, taking out the final 3-2 in a mere 1hr 45 minutes! Great effort Sam.

In the weekend just gone, the Auckland Squash Open was played. Belmont was well represented, with Gabe Yam defeating tournament second seed and 2017 NZ representative Ben Grindrod in four games in the Men's Open, and Matthew Lucente finishing 3rd in the Men's Open.

In the Women's Open draw, on the way to winning the Consolation Plate final, Natalie Sayes reached A2 grading; a remarkable achievement for someone so young.  Many congrats Natalie!

Lastly, our junior squash coaching programmes for members are scheduled to begin again in early May, starting 4 May.
