President's Ramble
Our NZ Junior Squash Reps
Late last month the club had the pleasure of hosting a farewell evening for the NZ Girls and Boys Junior squash teams, before they left for the World Junior Champs in Malaysia.
It was a fantastic evening, with a large number of members and parents there to farewell the teams. Of the 12 players representing NZ, four are from our club; Gabe Yam, Elijah Thomas, Natalie Sayes and Ella Lash.
AGM
On Thursday 15 August the Club will hold its 2019 AGM. Formal notice has been sent to all senior members inviting them to the meeting. Nearly all the existing Committee are willing and happy to continue for another year, the annual audited accounts have been finished and will be presented, and the new season’s annual subscriptions will be approved (proposed to be the same as the last 2 seasons).
Membership renewal invoices will be issued to all members by 31 August – with discounts for full payment by 30 September.
I will also be able to update the meeting on progress with the club’s Strategic Plan and recent discussions with the Bowling Club about gaining access to their back green.
Club News
Bar Upgrade
The upgrade of the bar will be undertaken from 17-25 August. Many thanks to Mike Dahlberg for managing this project, and to Bev and Geoff Diggle and Pete Cairns for their input into the upgrade design.
We have a small group of volunteers who will complete the work. However, we are looking for a builder to help us for about an hour on Saturday 17th – please contact Mike Dahlberg if you can help us (??).
Working Bee
On Saturday 31 August, the club will have a working bee from 9 - 11 am. Some things around the club need to be maintained by members, so please come and give an hour of your time to help keep our facilities in tip-top shape.
The more people we have help, the less time it will take!
Love Tennis National Open Day
In conjunction with Tennis NZ, on 7-8 September the club will be taking part in an event called “Love Tennis”. This event will be a fantastic opportunity to promote our club within our area and attract new members.
More information about this event will be communicated nearer the time. This is a great chance for you to bring a friend/neighbour/relative down to the club to have a go at tennis.
Quiz Night
Our ever-popular Quiz Night is back! Pencil in Saturday 28 September for what will be a great night’s fun.
Tennis News
The 2019/20 season is just around the corner. A comprehensive tennis calendar for the season has been drafted (see below).
Senior Interclub
We are currently finalizing our 2019/20 Tennis Northern interclub teams and have 19 teams already – one more than last year. If you are interested in playing senior tennis interclub, please email the club asap.
Senior interclub begins on Monday 16 September. As soon as draws have been released, Rex Grey will be in touch with all team captains.
Mid-week Interclub
If you would like to play mid-week interclub and did not play last year then please contact Suzanne (021 445 744) or Philippa (027 292 7849). Existing players should have been contacted.
C grade and Social grade play on Mondays. Premier, A and B grades play on Tuesdays.
The senior tennis opening day is set for Sunday 1 September, starting at 2pm.
Junior Interclub
Our junior tennis interclub trials are scheduled for 7-8 September. There are various times for the different age groups – details will be posted on the website and club noticeboard. Any juniors interested in playing interclub tennis must pre-register. Please email michellerobson2000@gmail.com asap.
In addition, we will also be taking new junior member registrations from 9.00am on both days.
Squash News
Last month our Women's C Grade and Men's D grade superchamps teams won their regional titles! Many congrats to both teams.
In late September, the C Grade women's team will travel to Invercargill while the D Grade team will travel to Whangarei to compete in the national finals.
Expertly managed by Gottfried Pausch and Hayden Adams respectively, these teams have got an incredible opportunity to build on last year’s success when we won the national E Grade champs.
