President's Ramble

Strategic Plan
The club is about to start putting together its next Strategic Plan. With the facility improvements now largely complete (at least without the need for building permits), it is time to consider what we want the club to look like in 5-10 years' time, especially with the housing intensification about to start next year and likely demand on our facilities.

Over the next few months we will be surveying members on their thoughts, as well as having member briefings to discuss options and agree on a plan to cover our future direction.

Part of this planning will involve the Bayswater Bowling Club, and we and Devonport-Takapuna Local Board have already started informal discussions with them about their requirements, especially their plans for the back bowling green. Hopefully we can update members on these discussions at our AGM on 10 August (date to be confirmed).

Tennis News

Midweek social mixed doubles
With winter now upon us, getting out for a hit of tennis is more dictated by the weather. However, for those keen to keep some form and fitness, we still have the following:

  • Sunday social mixed doubles from 2-4.30pm
  • Monday mens night from 7-9pm,
  • Wednesday ladies social doubles from 9-11am, and
  • Thursday social mixed from 7.30-9pm.

And of course, Mark Nielsen is still running his fun and fitness programmes through the winter. Check his website for more details.

And don’t forget Mark’s school holiday programmes running through the July school holidays.

Squash News

Cousins Shield and Mitchell Cup results
The Kingdom Decorators-sponsored Cousins Shield and Mitchell Cup teams had a very successful tournament at Queen’s Birthday weekend.

With the men, a couple of late withdrawals due to illness and injury had a major impact on the team, so finishing 7th (our seeding) was a very creditable effort.

The women, however, exceeded all expectations, making the final v Thorndon. While we lost the final 3-1, it was very closely fought, with the win by our number 1, Jemyca Aribado, 3/2 over Rebecca Barnett, being a sensational game of squash to watch.

Auckland Junior Squash Open
The 2017 Auckland Junior Open was held from the 16-18 June. A number of juniors from the club took part, along with 8 international players from the USA, in the country for a training camp before the World Juniors.

After three days of tough competition, two first-time Auckland Junior Open champions were crowned. The Boys title was taken out by top seed Matthew Lucente who defeated clubmate and second seed Gabe Yam 3/1 in the final, while the Girls title was won by North Shore's Amara Afghan with a 3/0 victory over Belmont’s Natalie Sayes. Congrats to all the members who took part, including also Rafa Yam, Chris Laws, Jack Adams and Nina Holbrook. A full report on the results can be read here.

Congrats! Manu Yam Appointed 2017 New Zealand World Junior Men's Team Coach

Congrats to the team of Rafa Yam, Matthew Lucente, Gabe Yam, Sam Sayes and Brady James.
