President's Ramble

Driveway replacement

With our squash lounge renovation complete, it’s onto the next area of work – our driveway and carpark. Auckland Council is planning to upgrade these areas in the next 2-3 months and we are waiting for final drainage plans before confirming exact timing and impact on club access.

This work will extend all the way round behind the back tennis courts, and hopefully remove the pooling of water near Ray’s wall.

World Masters Games

Over the last week of April, several members participated in tennis or squash at the WMG. Some huge congratulations go to:

  • Jill Stoker – Silver in the 55+ B Grade Women's singles
  • Jill Stoker and Graeme Norman – Silver in the 50+ B Grade Mixed Doubles, and
  • Jacqui Anderson – Bronze in the 40+ A Grade Women's Singles

Tennis News

The 2016/17 season is nearly over – with just a few senior championship finals to play.

Congratulations to all 2017 junior and senior championship winners – once again there have been some great matches, played in excellent spirit. A full list of all winners will be advised in the next newsletter.

The tennis interclub season has also finished. Nine junior teams won their post-Xmas pennants, including the U18A girls and boys titles. In senior tennis interclub, our Men's Doubles 2 team won our only pennant for this season, winning the final on a games countback. Congratulations to all of these teams and their managers/supporters.

To recognise all of this season's winners, the junior prizegiving will be held on Friday 26 May at the club from 6.00pm.

As with last year, the senior prizegiving will be held on Wednesday 17 May at a Devonport restaurant (venue tbc).

Lastly, for those interested in playing interclub tennis through the winter, there is a winter interclub league starting in June, with matches every second Saturday through to the end of August. If you are interested in playing please contact Rex Grey rex.grey@me.com by 8 May.

Squash News

Last month the Oceania Junior Squash Championships were held in Henderson. Congratulations go to Natalie Sayes who won the girls U13 title in 5 games, and Matthew Lucente who beat Gabe Yam in the boys U17 final in 4 hard-fought games.

Following this, Natalie, Matthew and Gabe all played for NZ in the test series v Australia, and all won their matches as NZ won the test 26-10.

Our Friday night junior squash nights begin again on Friday 5 May from 4-6pm and run through terms 2 and 3. Remember, these nights are free for all junior members, as these sessions are included in the junior membership fees. The focus is on teaching the basics of squash, and having some fun at the same time. The sessions are run by Manu Yam, NZ Schools and Club Coach of Year in 2015, and racquets are provided for those that don’t have one, but want to give it a try.

And remember, for any seniors keen for a social hit, senior squash club night is every Thursday from 7.30pm.
