President's Ramble

A Club First in Squash!

As mentioned in the last newsletter, after the recent success of our E Grade men's team at the E Grade Auckland Super Champs District competition, late last month the team travelled to Christchurch to represent Belmont Park in the National Finals. After four days of competition, the Belmont team were victorious and took out the National E Grade title, winning 18 out of a possible 20 matches!

This is the FIRST time a Belmont squash team has won a National title! The trophy will be on display in the club office for the next few weeks until we formally present it at the Squash Prizegiving in late November (date TBA).

The team comprised Brendan Buckle, Ben Forde, John Alo, Shane Buckle, Christopher Laws and Jack Adams (Captain), with brilliant support from Hayden Adams as their Manager, and Manu Yam, our Club Squash Coach.

Not only were these 6 young men a force to be reckoned with on the court, many were very impressed with the way they conducted themselves off the court, which is a true reflection on the culture at Belmont Park.

A special thanks to our incredible coach Manu Yam, to the parents that travelled to Christchurch to lend their support (Tony Forde, Warren Buckle, Raoul Alo, and Jason & Fiona Laws), and to Glenn Read for sponsoring the team through his company, Quartz Wealth.

Tennis Court Bookings

With the tennis season about to get super-busy with junior and midweek tennis starting, it’s very important to check on iSquash when tennis courts are available for casual play.

Make sure you book a court if you want a social hit – and if you change your mind and don’t need the court, please cancel your booking so others can use the court.

The band is back – Plight of the Wrong Chords will play again!

At the senior tennis prizegiving in June, some of our club members formed a band and put on a brilliant performance for a couple hours.

It was so good, they’ve been invited to play again, this time on Saturday 15 December at the club. More details will be announced soon by their management team (Des Smith), but for now, make sure you put this date in your diary. It is likely to be a ticketed event as we will have to limit numbers, so watch out for the announcement.

Tennis News

Senior Interclub

All Tennis Northern senior interclub teams should now have had a couple of rounds of matches – and already it appears the Mens 5th Grade title could be a showdown between 2 Belmont teams, both of whom have taken near maximum points so far.

Midweek ladies interclub tennis hits off from next week after the school holidays. Good luck to our 5 teams.

Labour Weekend Fast Four Tournament

Rex Grey is organising a Fast 4 tournament for Sunday afternoon (21 October), 12.45pm for a prompt 1pm start and 4.30pm finish. If you’re interested in playing, register by emailing Rex at rex_grey@me.com or text Rex on 021 029 37884.

Junior Interclub

Junior interclub teams have been finalised and interclub coaching begins Monday 15 October from 4pm. All managers should know their coaching times, and we are waiting for the interclub draws to be released.

There is a meeting of all junior interclub managers on Tuesday 16 October, 6pm at the club.

Geoff, Louise and Michelle have done a brilliant job juggling the many, many requests received from players and parents, so let the season begin!

Saturday Coaching

Our very popular Saturday morning coaching starts again on Saturday 20 October – Labour weekend. Remember, it’s 9am for children aged <7, 10am for children aged 7-9, and 11am for children >9.

In addition, we will also be taking new junior member registrations that morning.

Wednesday Mixed Doubles Tennis

With Spring in the air, a Fast Four Tournament was held on Wednesday morning 5 September from 9-11am to introduce the newly renamed Wednesday Mixed Doubles.

The tournament was a huge success, with a great turnout from men and women and 5 courts in action.

Fast Four Mixed Doubles Tournament

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning of tennis and everyone is looking forward to further tournaments. The next Fast 4 Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday November 7. If you’re interested in playing, register by emailing Kirsten Wright on d.k.wright@xtra.co.nz.

And remember, Wednesday Mixed Doubles is on every week starting approximately 9 am.

Squash News

Winter Pennant Round 2 Champions

Our Men’s 1 team captained by Michael Laws won the Auckland Division 2 Pennant and our Ladies 1 team captained by Dorothea Kingnan won Division 3. These are winter round 2 pennants.

National Age Group Squash Championships

Just last weekend, the NZ Age Group Squash Champs were played in Auckland. The club had a huge number of entrants – testimony to the strength of our junior programmes.

Gabe Yam  In the U19 Boys final, Gabe Yam overcame his world junior team mate Anthony Lepper in five games after Lepper had raced to a 2-1 lead. Gabe is now ranked #1 in NZ in this age group – well done Gabe!

In the U11 Girls final, Grace Spencer was victorious and has become the Club’s youngest ever National champion.

In the U15 Girls final, Ella Lash finished runner up to her Waikato opponent.

In addition, Gabe Yam and Ethan Karels were selected for the Auckland Jr Boys team that won the Boys national teams event, while Ella Lash and Ashlee Pepper were part of the Auckland Jr Girls Team that finished 3rd.

Congrats to everyone who took part in their respective age group competitions.

Squash Club Champs

With the E Grade team involved in the national Super Champs finals, the junior club champs were postponed from the end of term 3. So, we’re now holding our junior and senior club champs together on 1-3 November. Entry sheets will be up in the club this weekend.

Auckland Age Group Rankings and NZ Open Rankings

As at 1 October the club had 15 juniors in the top ten of their respective age groups, including #1 boys and girls in the U11, #1 girl in U13, #1, 2 and 3 girls in the U15, #1 boy in the U19, and #1 Boys and Girls Juniors overall (Gabe Yam and Natalie Sayes).

Nationally, we have the #1 junior girls players in U11 (Grace Spencer), U13 (Ella Lash) and U15 (Natalie Sayes), while in the boys, #1 and 2 in the U19 age group.

On the senior rankings, Gabe Yam is now the 5th highest ranked male player – only professionals are in front of him!
