President's Ramble
Tennis courts - Over the school holidays the tennis courts were groomed, so you will notice a little more sand on the surface and a lot less moss. Also, thanks to an Auckland Council Local Board grant, we’ve replaced four of our old tennis nets.
Driveway - Unfortunately, progress with the driveway replacement has stalled, with Auckland Council now advising it can’t be undertaken until the 2nd half of 2018. This is hugely disappointing, as we can all see the damage now appearing. We are pushing them hard to get some decent temporary repairs completed to the potholes adjacent to the clubhouse and tennis courts.
Quiz Night - Recently the club held another quiz night. A hugely successful night, we’ve raised over $2,000 for junior tennis and squash initiatives (new junior tennis equipment has already been purchased). Congrats to the squash ladies team who again won the quiz for the umpteenth time, but only just!
Health & Safety - The club is running another free training session on how to use our defibrillator – we have locked in Wednesday 1 November at 7 pm. If you’re interested in attending, please email admin@belmontracquets.co.nz for more details and to register.
Tennis News
Junior interclub coaching started Monday 16th, with junior interclub matches starting from Wednesday 25th. All junior interclub players should have heard from their manager regarding practice times and first matches. If you haven’t heard anything about your team, please contact Louise Welte on 021 949 749.
Remember, there is no junior or senior tennis interclub over Labour Weekend, however there will still be junior interclub coaching on Monday 23rd from 4pm.
On Saturday 21st October our junior tennis coaching for non-interclub players starts again from 9am.
On Sunday 22nd there will be a “Fast 4” tournament starting from 1pm. A number of players have entered, so if you’re keen to have a bit of fun this coming Sunday, contact Rex Grey on 021 029 37 884.
Squash News
Last month the junior squash club champs were played. Congratulations to everyone who took part, and especially to our 2018 junior girls and boys champions - Natalie Sayes and Rafa Yam.
Boys Open
Champion: Rafa Yam; runner-up Michael Laws
Girls Open
Champion: Natalie Sayes; runner-up Clare Pyc
The junior and senior squash prizegiving will be held next month (date tbc).
The club’s top junior boys squash players, Matthew Lucente and Gabe Yam, finished first and second respectively in the NZ Junior Nationals under 19 division held recently in Christchurch. Seeded 1 and 2, and only just turned 17, both boys lived up to their seedings. Many congrats Matthew on a fantastic win, and Gabe on again pushing Matthew to the limit!
Our newest national age-group champion is Natalie Sayes, who won the U15 Girls title in a titanic battle – saving a match point before winning 13-11 in the 5th game. Brilliant effort Natalie!

The Club’s senior squash club champs are scheduled for 26 to 28 October. Entry forms will be up this week.
Lastly, a world first happened last weekend in any professional sport when Ali Farag and Nour El Tayeb become the first married couple to win a major sporting event on the same day – the 2017 US Squash Open. Read more here https://www.usopensquash.com/2017-finals/

And of course, a very big thanks to the following organisations who continue to give very generous support to the Club.
