President's Ramble

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update
The COVID-19 virus is making everyone think a lot more carefully about wellness and hygiene. This is even more so when it comes to playing sport – especially where close personal contact can occur.

We ask that everyone makes sensible decisions with regards to their health, or their child’s health, so that our members stay as healthy as possible. With this in mind, the following measures have been implemented at the club until further notice:

  • There should be no sharing of drink bottles or towels between players
  • Tennis and squash members do not need to shake their opponents’ hands (but should at least say “well played!”)
  • Squash players MUST NOT wipe their hands on the court walls. Towels must be used to wipe away perspiration and these towels can be kept on court and placed in front of the tin between rallies – even during interclub (confirmed with Squash Auckland).
  • If you have just returned to NZ from overseas, please ensure you are aware of the countries and areas of concern where self-isolation may be required/expected.
  • If you’re not feeling well, do not come down to the club. Contact a health professional and seek professional advice, adhering to their procedures for how this should be done.

Above all else – let’s all stay virus-free.

Black Tie Dinner Saturday 21 March from 6pm
Our inaugural Black-Tie dinner event is now only a few sleeps away. With all tickets sold, the night is sure to be a huge success and a lot of fun.

We are currently finalising the list of auction items (which looks amazing – worth nearly $20,000) and this list will be emailed to all club members prior to the dinner. Yes, even if you’re unable to attend, you can still make a bid!

PLEASE NOTE: The evening is starting slightly earlier – drinks from 6.00pm onwards.

Our thanks again to Vic & Jemma from Harcourts for their help with the event and running the live auction. Also, a huge thanks to all the other businesses and members who have donated items for the auction.

New Club Logo/branding and clothing
Just prior to Christmas the club reviewed its logo and branding, and the Committee has settled on a new, more modern logo and branding (see above and our website) with the help from Nikki Clerke at Seemore Design.

We are currently looking at a range of clothing for the 2020/21 season and hope to have some examples available soon for viewing.

Membership breaks 500
If you’re thinking the courts have been busier this summer and there are a few new faces at the club – you’re correct! Our membership numbers have increased considerably this season and have broken through the 500 mark again.

Please ensure you say hello and make our new members feel very welcome.

Harcourts Message from Vic & Jemma

It's been an exciting last few months out there in real estate. With some great energy back in the market we have seen lots of exciting auctions and great sales on the peninsula. It's excellent to see 2020 off to a good start after a slightly quieter 2019.  With interest rates at an all time low it certainly seems to be fuelling the buyers who have been waiting for the right time to act. The constant that remains in this area, is the superb location, beaches, community and schools which means that it is always a desirable place to live no matter what is happening with the market in the rest of the country.

So make the most of the last summer sun and the energy in the market. If you have been thinking about selling – give us a call and let us help you achieve a great result for your home.  Otherwise get out on the court and enjoy the positive energy and fun that the club offers.  We look forward to hopefully seeing some of you at the fantastic black tie event coming up to help raise funds for the club. See you there!

Tennis News

Our junior coaching programmes finish through the week of 16-21 March. On Saturday 21st, Harcourts will have their coffee and ice cream cart at the club, so make sure you stay for a coffee and watch the final morning of junior tennis coaching and interclub.

In the next few weeks our junior and senior tennis club champs will be held. Every year these competitions seem to get bigger, busier and better. We’re expecting the same for 2020.

Equally important at such as the junior champs is the support from parents. Please take the chance to leave work a little early and come and support your children when competition starts Monday 23 March. The bar will be open to ensure everyone can fight off dehydration!

With summer interclub into the final rounds, good luck to those teams who are close to winning their competitions. Remember, any potential rained out matches must be played, so if managers/captains have any trouble getting opponents to agree to a date, let Louise or Rex know asap so that we can contact Tennis Northern and secure points.

Squash News

As many will have seen, we are in the middle of re-plastering and painting our 3 squash courts. Courts 1 & 2 have been completed and court 3 will be done in late March.

Our huge thanks to Pub Charity and NZCT for helping to fund most of this work.

The Auckland Junior Squash Team to compete in the annual Junior Quadrangular tournament against Northland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty at the Franklin Squash Club on 28-29 March has just been announced and our club has a fantastic representation – especially with the number of girls chosen. Good luck to everyone competing!

Lastly, our junior squash coaching programmes for members are scheduled to begin again in last week of April – more details will follow once the full programme has been finalised.

Important Dates for your Diary

And of course, a very big thanks to the organisations below who continue to give very generous support to the Club.

Kind Regards
